Liposuction

Suitability for a liposuction procedure can be discussed with your Surgeon and at your consultation but experience has taught us that the best outcome from liposuction is in our patients who:

• Have fat deposits that cannot be removed by exercise and diet.
• Want to improve their body proportions and create a more masculine shape.
• Have localised areas of fat that are disproportionate.

Your free consultation will be with one of our experienced Patient Co-ordinators and cosmetic nurses who will explain the liposuction procedure fully and discuss your expectations and the outcome you will achieve. They will organise a time that is convenient for you to meet with your Surgeon before your liposuction procedure who will explain how you can expect to look after having liposuction, and will discuss the associated risks and alternatives.

Liposuction is usually done under general anaesthetic. This means that you will be asleep throughout the procedure and will feel no pain. If only a small area of fat is to be removed, local anaesthetic may be used instead. This means that you will be awake during the procedure, but the area being treated will be completely numb.

Liposuction may be carried out as a day case, with no overnight stay in hospital. However, if you are having extensive treatment, you will probably need to stay in hospital for one night.

You will need to rest after your liposuction procedure until the effects of the anaesthetic have passed and general painkillers can be used if needed.

When you feel ready, you can begin to drink and eat starting with clear fluids.
You will need to make arrangements to be driven home. Before you leave, your Nurse will advise you about your healing time and will arrange a follow up appointment for you. This is usually about 2 weeks after your liposuction procedure.

Will I have bruising after my liposuction procedure?
Depending on the extent of your operation, you can expect considerable bruising, which can be painful and take about a month to disappear. There will also be swelling that may not completely settle for up to six months. You will have scars where the incisions were made and the skin in the treated area may not be totally smooth

Will I have the shape I wanted?
Liposuction can remove fat that you have not been able to shift with diet and exercise. It can change the shape of your body, but it is not a treatment for weight control or obesity, and it cannot remove cellulite or stretch marks.

Will the fat come back?
The results of liposuction can be long-lasting; if you maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly your new shape will last. If you put on weight, fatty bulges may re-appear.

When will I be able to see the results?
Your Surgeon will be able to indicate where he sees immediate improvement but usually you will see the results from your liposuction procedure up to 8 weeks later.
